Art in Public Places - Opening

Date: July, 6th 2018 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Arc of Seneca Cayuga and the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a public exhibition of original digitally-created works by artists with developmental disabilities. The community-based exhibition, called Art In Public Places, will begin on July 6 with a public opening at Arc’s Spot Light Studio from 5:00-7:00. The exhibit will be then divided for showings in the central business district lobbies of Chemung Canal Trust Company, Empower Federal Credit Union, Key Bank, Lyons National Bank and Tompkins Trust Company. There will also be a display at the offices of the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce. The exhibits will be on display at those locations from July 9-21 during regular business hours. Following that, the exhibit will be on display at the Seymour Library from July 23-28.

Arc of Seneca Cayuga Executive Director,  Allen Connely, said, “Arc is so pleased to be working with the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce, area financial institutions and the Seymour Library  to bring about this wonderful event, which underscores our commitment to promoting inclusiveness and celebrating everyone’s unique talents.” Arc of Seneca Cayuga mission is to embrace diversity by recognizing the uniqueness of each individual and by working to ensure the success of people with disabilities as they pursue lives of choice and fulfillment. The agency provides services to more than 1,200 individuals and their families in Seneca and Cayuga Counties. Chamber Executive Director, Tracy Verrier, pointed to the exhibition as, “A great example of the benefits which can be derived from community partnerships, which the Chamber works to foster.”

The exhibition was made possible by grants from the Cayuga Community Fund of the Central New York,  the Green Family Foundation and with public funds provided from NYSCA’s Decentralization Program, administered locally by the Finger Lakes Community Arts Council. The funding was used purchase for the digital art computer labs and a professional photo quality color printer. The labs have been in use at Arc of Seneca Cayuga Day Service sites since last summer.  In addition, public funding was provided by the New York State Council on the Arts through the Finger Lakes Arts Council. This grant enabled Arc of Seneca Cayuga to bring in professional artist, Gail Demi, for a residency to work with the contributing artists to help them develop their skills. Demi is also the curator of the exhibition.

Ed Sayles, Arc’s Community Relations Specialist, noted that, “We held a similar exhibition last year in the Seneca Falls/Waterloo Business District and are looking forward to repeating that success in Auburn.” He credits the original concept of the exhibit to Randi Rhinehart and Joyce Weir of the Developmental Disabilities Giving Circle of Rochester. The Giving Circle was the lead sponsor of last year’s exhibition.
