CAYUGA COUNTY LIVING

The land formations of Cayuga County are nearly 65 miles long and vary from the drumlins of the north, through the flat central plain region to the hilly southern plateau. 693 square miles of Cayuga stretching from the shore of Lake Ontario into the heart of the Finger Lakes Region. Cayuga County has twenty-three incorporated towns.

According to the 2001 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the largest portion of Cayuga County's total population of 81,401 resides within the center of the County which includes the City of Auburn with a population of 28,574.

Well known for it's wealth of 19th century architecture, the County offers a diversity of housing choices, with residents enjoying a twenty two minute mean travel time to work.

REAL ESTATE

Homes in Cayuga County are affordable! Home sites vary from cityscapes to countryside. Some dwellings date to the early 19th century. In downtown Auburn, you can find historic Victorian era homes. Suburban developments offer custom single-family homes and with our miles of lakefront, lakeside cottages offer magnificent living styles. Apartments are convenient and available. Real estate taxes are reasonable. Nearly 20 realtors covering all corners of the county provide friendly, professional assistance.

The commercial real estate market accommodates a wide variety of business needs, including light and heavy manufacturing, corporate offices, small businesses and professional buildings.

The City of Auburn and Cayuga County's economic development offices offer information on the area's economic development zones that can offer tax relief for rent, utility discounts and other incentives.

EDUCATION

When it comes to education, Cayuga County is complemented by outstanding institutions of higher education and a strong network of public, private and parochial elementary and secondary schools. These schools offer educational programs to fit the needs of all students in all disciplines, including business, the arts and education.

Our area's primary and secondary schools, both public and private are excellent. Neighborhood schools stress basic skills in reading, writing and math. Education is strengthened by a public library system and communities committed to supporting quality, affordable education for their young people. Adult and student vocational education is available from the Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services. Many area high schools also offer continuing education for adults.

Through the Cayuga County Youth Bureau the physical, emotional and social well being of the youth in Cayuga County are promoted. The Youth Bureau stimulates and supports the development of services and activities designed to assist all youth in becoming valued, contributing members of society. It actively supports programs, which seek to cultivate the positive involvement and attachment of youth to family, school, and positive peer groups.

Our region also offers quality day care and preschool settings to help the youngest students develop a love of learning.

Higher Education

There are forty colleges, universities and business schools within a picturesque drive of an hour and a half. These include two medical schools and several universities that provide law degrees and numerous Ph.D. programs, as well as schools specializing in business and technical programs.

HEALTH CARE

Cayuga County health needs are served by Auburn Memorial Hospital, a 226-bed acute care facility with a full range of inpatient and outpatient services. Founded in 1878, the AMH team has 950 employees and 153 medical/dental practitioners in virtually all medical specialties. Specific clinical services offered by Auburn Memorial include emergency care, intensive care, coronary care, maternity, lab services, pediatrics, psychiatric and others.

Syracuse and Rochester both have significant medical communities and hospitals. Upstate Medical Center of Syracuse University and Strong Memorial Hospital are nationally known. Both are teaching hospitals with leading-edge equipment and techniques.
Where you live also affects health care costs. The healthy environment and the competitive market here help the private carriers. HMO's and other innovative provider networks keep costs for care comparatively low.

Community Health Services

Cayuga County's Community Health Services Division offers nursing, health promotion, health guidance, injury prevention programs, maternity antipartum and post-partum programs. Clinics are offered to assist in the prevention and control of communicable diseases, promotion of dental health, immunization, lead poisoning prevention, breast and cervical screening, adolescent pregnancy prevention and childbirth education classes.

Division of Environmental Health

Under the Environmental Health Division, Cayuga County ensures public safety. The public water supplies are carefully monitored through the community water systems, non-community water supplies, bottled and bulk water, ice manufacturing and distribution and cross connection control.

This Division conducts food service operator training, food establishment inspections, seasonal permits and monitors and inspects food for the aged and food vending machines. Under community sanitation, it inspects, regulates and approves sewage disposal, monitors water supplies, provides technical advice to homeowners who have their water tested at a private laboratory, and investigates problem wells.

SHOPPING & HOSPITALITY

Cayuga County is home to numerous boutiques; family owned antique stores and specialty shops, as well as Wal-Mart Super Center, Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse and many more. The Fingerlakes Mall makes the shopping experience easy and fun with national retailers including Bass Pro Shop and JCPenney. There are also historically oriented places for shopping including museums, restored homes and farms. In short, you can find almost anything you want or need in Cayuga County.

Lakeside, ethnic, brewpub or continental, there are restaurants and cafes for everyone. Very contemporary decor or a room steeped in history, nouvelle cuisine or hearty fare, one of Cayuga County's restaurants should fill the bill. Local wineries offer both tasting and shopping.

Cayuga County hospitality welcomes the business and tourist traveler alike, with places for memories and places for meetings and has hosted world-class artists and states people. The inns and several national hotels, including the Holiday Inn, provide modern facilities such as conference and banquet rooms, meeting services, and other conveniences.
